Medical Records and Workforce Development are preparing for the next cohort of the Medical Coder Apprenticeship Program to start Fall 2026. EAH is partnered with Wallace State Community College and courses are offered on-line. This program is available to current EAH employees seeking career advancement and skill development within Medical Records.

Program Overview:

Program prepares you to obtain a Certified Coding Specialist certification and work as a medical coder.

  • The CCS program is 5 semesters long
    • This comprehensive coding program is completed after two semesters of general education courses and three semesters of program courses.
  • 2 semesters of pre-requisites must be completed first
    • Complete all HIT-required general education courses and HIT 110 (with a grade of “C” or better before June 1) to be considered for HIT program admission in the fall semester.
    • Students who complete required HIT general education classes with at least a grade of “C” between June 2 and September 1 may be considered for program acceptance on a space-available basis.
  • A minimum of 17 ACT composite score (National or Residual) is required for admission consideration.
    • ACT exam must be completed by 4/24
  • You must meet WSCC’s general admission requirements and medical coding program admission requirements.

    • Unconditional admission to the college
    • The student must be in good standing with the college.
  • Admission into the HIT Program Required
  • Must possess a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale with a grade of “C” or better on all general required pre-HIT courses.

Eligibility

  • Any EAH employee in good standing who has a minimum of 9 months to 1 year is eligible to apply
  • Full time, part time, prn, or temporary status
  • These positions are remote (off - site/at home); applicant must be able to meet the demands of an off -site environment, including but not limited to self -motivated and productive work ethic

Requirements

Participation requires completion of the established application and selection process and ongoing compliance with EAH employment standards, including:

  • Current EAH employees must first apply and be selected by EAH to participate in the program
    • Part of the EAH application process is your ability to follow directions, check your emails, and meet deadlines.
    • Interviews will also be scheduled.
    • We will request internal reference from your current manager
    • Disciplines will be reviewed
  • Then, if selected by EAH, you must meet WSCC’s general admission requirements and medical coding program admission requirements.
  • You will also be working in the different areas of the Medical Records department, eventually coding while working on your credential.

Employment Commitment

Employee must obtain credential within one year of placement into the position as student coder.

You must work FULL-TIME as a professional coder following program completion. The 2-year work-commitment begins once you have achieved certification.

  • EAH will pay for Tuition for Semester 3-5
  • Tuition Reimbursement can be used for Pre-requisites

  • Designated hourly rate during classroom and training phases
