EAMC Dietary Employee Awarded College Scholarship
Britney Floyd was a single mom with daughters who were 15 months old and 3 months old when she joined EAMC’s Nutrition and Food Services department in May 2016. It had been 10 years since Britney graduated high school, so when she heard about the School at Work (SAW) program at EAMC in 2017, Britney applied to enroll. She was accepted and excelled through the yearlong program designed to help employees re-engage in their education with hopes of self-development that will enable them to complete a college degree and/or to become more knowledgeable and confident in healthcare to earn a promotion.
Recognized for her SAW success, Britney was nominated by her director for EAMC’s “50 For The Future” program in Summer 2018. This two-year leadership development program enables employees to meet quarterly with hospital administrators where they learn more about hospital operations, participate in round table discussions and take part in activities that encourage personal development.
Britney not only tackled 50 For The Future over the two years that followed, but she also married Jonathan Floyd, gave birth to her third daughter, completed a handful of classes at Southern Union and began working toward a Certified Dietary Management (CDM) certificate at Auburn University which she expects to finish by this December.
Because of her determination, she was recently asked to attend Administration’s Daily Huddle in the boardroom with her director, Curt Bailey. Several of them praised Britney for her work ethic and attitude, but the words that most caught Britney off-guard came from President and CEO Laura Grill.
“You’ve overcome odds and obstacles, and you’ve been committed, and that commitment will take you far in life,” said Grill. “You have the right heart and the right attitude.” Grill wrapped up her comments by saying “we’re going to scholarship you in your continued work at Southern Union. We don’t want you to worry about paying for that. We just want you to excel.”
Britney was at a loss for words at the moment, but managed to say, “I’m blessed to have EAMC and I’m proud to be part of this family.” Last week, Britney reflected on that day. “People couldn’t see my face (due to my mask), but my mouth was wide open. The first thing I did was call my mom. She was pretty excited; so was my dad.” Britney’s mother is Angela Hamby, lactation consultant at EAMC.
Britney’s goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University in Nutrition, Dietetics. She would be the last of Hamby’s six children to all earn a degree from Auburn.
