OPELIKA, Ala.—East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) and EAMC-Lanier earned recognition from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for educating and promoting organ donation awareness.

“These recognition awards signify the profound commitment our organization has toward organ donation,” said Megan Harper, BSN, RN (ICU supervisor and organ donation committee chair). “The diligence and dedication shown by our team in educating and encouraging organ donation discussions with patients and families are deeply appreciated, and I want to express gratitude to everyone for their contributions.”

The recognitions were announced during a flag-raising ceremony held at EAMC on April 3 to mark the beginning of Donate Life Month. EAMC earned Platinum Recognition status, and EAMC-Lanier earned Bronze Recognition status as a result of scoring updates for rural/critical-access hospitals.

Recognition statuses are given in Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Award statuses are received by earning points for conducting or participating in events aimed at raising awareness about the benefits of organ donation in health care.

Some examples of the activities EAMC and EAMC-Lanier conducted to earn points are:

  • Flag-raising ceremony during National Donate Life Month, and the raising of the same flag whenever organs are procured from a patient who agreed to be an organ donor upon death.
  • Displaying campaign posters in hospital lobby to promote organ donation during National Donate Life Month
  • Staff participating in National Blue/Green Day by wearing blue or green to show support for organ donation.
  • Social media posts providing links to register as an organ donor
