Laura Matthews, director of Inpatient Pharmacy Services for East Alabama Health, was one of 17 pharmacists to recently earn the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ (ASHP) prestigious Certified Pharmacy Executive Leader (CPEL) credential.

“We are incredibly proud of Laura for this accomplishment,” said Chuck Beams, East Alabama Health’s chief pharmacy officer. “This is a major professional achievement that recognizes her leadership, vision and commitment to advancing pharmacy practice at the highest level.”

The CPEL credential is reserved for leaders who demonstrate excellence in strategy, people management, and advancing pharmacy services across complex health systems.

To be eligible for the credential, pharmacists must have a minimum of five years of progressive and sustained healthcare leadership experience and currently be an executive leader in a health care organization that promotes positive patient outcomes. In addition, selected applicants must attend a mutli-day capstone program during which participants discuss ethical leadership decisions for various cases and create deliverables.
