Progress Leads to Pound Cake: Osborn Rolls Through Recovery at ARU
November 2, 2023
Even at the age of 91, Henry Osborn still has a get-up-and-go attitude. After discharging from East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) following a heart attack that required surgery, he immediately turned his focus toward his recovery.
Having recently served as caretaker for his wife after she suffered a stroke, Osborn already had a place in mind for his recovery. His wife had received therapy treatment at EAMC-Lanier’s Acute Rehabilitation Unit (ARU), and her experience is what he says guided him to the ARU.
“I knew the only place that could get me back to where I needed to be was EAMC-Lanier,” Osborn said.
While at the ARU, he worked hard during his therapy sessions and made excellent progress. By the end of his week-long stay, Osborn could perform all his self-care tasks without assistance, move without fatigue and had regained the independence he had prior to his heart attack.
“It was an A plus experience,” Osborn reflected. “They were really encouraging about my condition.”
Before he could “graduate” from the ARU and be discharged home, he faced one final test. With help from his family, physical therapy team and his favorite cooking utensils from home, Osborn baked his famous cream cheese pound cake to share with the team as a Halloween treat.
Osborn stated that he highly recommends the ARU to those that need rehabilitative services and is grateful for the impact the unit has had on his life.
