Expectant mothers in Chambers County now have a closer option for pregnancy education classes. East Alabama Health will begin offering a Prepared Childbirth class at its EAMC-Lanier Rural Emergency Hospital campus later this month.

The Prepared Childbirth class is designed to help expectant parents prepare for childbirth by providing insight on the techniques needed for labor and delivery, postpartum care and infant care.

"We are excited to offer mothers in Chambers County this educational opportunity,” said Rosemary Cummings, executive director of Women and Children Services at East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC). “These classes give parents practical tools and confidence, so they feel more prepared through pregnancy, delivery and the transition home with their new baby.”

The first two-hour class will be held on Wednesday, May 27 from 6 - 8 p.m. Eastern time, and the registration cost for mothers-to-be is only $30. There is no additional cost for the spouse/support person to attend.  Amy Jordan, a nurse on the Childbirth Unit at EAMC, will lead the classes.

This course introduces the physical changes mothers can expect during pregnancy, labor, delivery and after the birth of their child. Attendees learn about hospital procedures, anesthesia, and medications, as well as information about rooming-in with their newborn. Comfort measures and basic coping strategies for laboring, pushing and birth are also introduced.

Additional classes will be held monthly. To register for the class in Valley, and to find classes in the future, visit the Women’s Health Classes & Programs page to learn more.
