Safe Haven Law

Safe Haven

The Alabama Safe Haven Law allows parents to safely and anonymously surrender their newborn child within 45 days of birth at designated Safe Haven locations without fear of prosecution.

Safe Haven locations include:

  • A licensed hospital which operates an emergency department
  • A fire station that is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year with at least one emergency medical services personnel on site.

How It Works

You may bring your baby with no questions asked to the emergency department.

  • The Safe Haven law provides protection from prosecution if the infant is surrendered within 45 days of birth.
  • A medical professional will immediately ensure your child is safe and cared for.
