Geriatric Psychiatry
As our loved ones age and begin to encounter more physical challenges and, in some cases, chronic illnesses, their mental health and stability can also endure significant change.
Some periodic sadness and withdrawal ins normal, but persistent personality and behavioral changes may indicate that the person is suffering from a mental illness, such as depression, anxiety, dementia or a mood disorder.
The Geriatric Psychiatry Unit at East Alabama Medical Center provides a safe and secure environment for older adults, staffed by trained professionals who specialize in geriatric behavioral health.
Our care providers understand the unique needs and challenges faced by older adults with behavioral issues, and they work tirelessly to ensure that each patient receives personalized care that meets their specific needs.
Some signs and symptoms and signs of mental illness in an older individual include:
- Social withdrawal
- Mood changes
- Memory loss, forgetfulness, or confusion
- Sleeping issues (insomnia, sleeping too often)
- Excessive crying
- Overeating or poor appetite
- Changes in personal care or appearance
- Suicidal thoughts
While in the Geriatric Psychiatry Unit, patients are encouraged to participate in a range of therapeutic activities and programs designed to promote healing and improve quality of life. Our goal is to provide high quality, compassionate care and support to aging loved ones who are dealing with behavioral issues.
