Art Therapy at Spencer Cancer Center

At Spencer Cancer Center, healing is about more than medicine. Our new Art Therapy Program is designed to support patients emotionally and mentally throughout their cancer journey by providing a creative, calming outlet during treatment and beyond.

This program offers multiple ways for patients to participate, meeting them where they are in their care:

  • Chairside art therapy during infusion treatments, allowing patients to create while receiving care in a comfortable, supportive environment
  • Take-home art assignments for radiation patients, giving them a meaningful and relaxing activity to continue at home
  • Bimonthly group art therapy sessions held in our conference room and led by a current Auburn University graduate art student

No artistic experience is needed. Art therapy focuses on expression, reflection, and emotional well-being— the focus is on the process, not the product.

Why Art Therapy Matters for Cancer Patients

Research shows that creative expression can play an important role in emotional and mental wellness during cancer treatment. Art therapy can help patients:

  • Reduce stress, anxiety, and treatment-related fatigue
  • Express emotions that may be difficult to put into words
  • Improve mood and overall sense of well-being
  • Create moments of calm, focus, and distraction during long treatments
  • Feel empowered and in control during a challenging time

By integrating art therapy into the care experience, Spencer Cancer Center is proud to offer another layer of compassionate, whole-person care. This program reflects our commitment to treating not only the disease, but the person—supporting healing of the mind, body, and spirit.
