The Joint Commission Certified
As the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare, the Joint Commission sets rigorous quality standards and evaluates if healthcare organizations meet them. Organizations must go through rigorous evaluation to earn and maintain Joint Commission certification. East Alabama Health’s commitment to delivering the highest quality of care to every patient has earned us Joint Commission accreditation for nearly 65 years.
The Joint Commission Certified | Inpatient Diabetes
East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Inpatient Diabetes Disease-Specific Care Certification by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. EAMC was the first hospital in Alabama to become certified in this category by The Joint Commission (TJC)—in 2010—and remains the only hospital in Alabama certified in inpatient diabetes. In fact, there are only 60 hospitals in the United States with this prestigious certification from The Joint Commission.
The Joint Commission Certified | Primary Stroke Center
East Alabama Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Primary Stroke Center Certification. To obtain the designation, East Alabama Medical Center underwent a rigorous, onsite review process. During the visit, a Joint Commission reviewer evaluated compliance with related certification standards; for example: initiation and delivery of stroke patient care, utilization of current evidence-based guidelines of stroke care, continuing staff and provider stroke specific education, and timeliness of stroke specific patient care metrics.
Best Maternity Hospitals 2024
East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) was featured on Newsweek’s 2024 list of America’s Best Maternity Hospitals. EAMC was one of only three Alabama hospitals to receive a five-star ribbon score, the highest tier awarded based on the list’s ranking criteria. During the nationwide survey, hospital managers and medical professionals were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals and rate them on a 1-10 scale. Patient survey data was taken from publicly available information about patient experience for the hospital. The hospital quality metrics score was determined by using data from The Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA).
America's Best-in-State Employers Alabama | Forbes 2023
East Alabama Health (EAH) made the Forbes list of America’s Best-in-State Employers 2023 for Alabama. The award list, compiled by Forbes and Statista, was announced in late August 2023. East Alabama Health was one of only two Lee County-based employers to make the list, along with Auburn University, and one of only four hospitals in Alabama to be recognized.
AHA/ASA Stroke Gold Plus with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll
East Alabama Medical Center has been awarded Stroke GOLD PLUS with Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Get with the Guidelines. The hospital received this honor for its commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.
Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award | 2023
The Cardiac Surgery Excellence Award™ recognizes hospitals that deliver superior patient outcomes in heart bypass surgery and heart valve surgery. East Alabama Medical Center was recognized as being in the top five percent of all hospitals when it comes to cardiac surgery, and one of the top 50 in the nation. Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance using a formula that takes the typical procedure performance and patient risks to create a predicted outcome. Hospitals are then given a star rating based on the actual outcome in comparison to the predicted outcome.

East Alabama Medical Center has been recognized as one of the top 10 percent of hospitals for mammograms. East Alabama Health offers comprehensive care for women's health, and has a Breast Health Center located in Auburn. The Women’s Choice Award recognizes the best brands, companies and healthcare facilities so that women and their families can feel confident when using said providers. Women’s Choice Best Hospitals must demonstrate exceptional ratings, providing the highest level of care and commitment to their patients’ health and well-being.

East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) has earned accreditation from Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery. The accreditation recognizes EAMC’s dedication to delivering high-quality, compassionate patient care with an emphasis on safety. Status as an accredited robotic center of excellence means that EAMC has met nationally and international recognized standards. Healthcare facilities and surgeons seeking SRC accreditation must undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure they meet SRC’s proven standards and requirements.
American College of Cardiology | Transcatheter Valve Certification
The American College of Cardiology has recognized East Alabama Medical Center for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients receiving transcatheter valve repair and replacement procedures. EAMC was awarded Transcatheter Valve Certification based on evaluation of the staff’s ability to meet standards for multidisciplinary teams, formalized training, shared decision-making and registry performance.
Blue Distinction Centers+ for Cardiac Care | 2023
East Alabama Medical Center has earned designation from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama as a Blue Distinction Centers+ for Cardiac Care, as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. Blue Distinction Centers are nationally designated providers that have proven to deliver quality care with safe practices that lead to better health outcomes for patients. Health care facilities recognized as Blue Distinction Centers are assessed using quality information supplied by facilities and third-party data registries, which were developed with input from the medical community and leading accreditation and quality organizations. Blue Distinction Centers+ have also proven to provide more cost-efficient care and are evaluated using cost measures derived from Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) companies’ medical claims.
American College of Radiology Accredited Low Dose Cancer Screening Facility
East Alabama Health's Outpatient Imaging and Lab Outreach at the East Alabama Medical Center Freestanding Emergency Department has received accreditation and certificates for its CT machines, designating the facility as a low dose lung cancer screening facility by the American College of Radiology (ACR) as of May 30, 2023. This recognition underscores East Alabama Health's commitment to patient safety and high-quality healthcare, demonstrating their adherence to rigorous standards set by the ACR. The accreditation and certificates signify the facility's utilization of advanced technology and skilled professionals, ensuring optimal care and accurate diagnostic outcomes for patients while minimizing radiation exposure risks.
American College of Radiology Accredited Prostate Cancer MRI Center
East Alabama Health has been named a Prostate Cancer MRI Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The ACR designation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.
