East Alabama Health's Internal Medicine Residency Program offers residents the opportunity to pursue their academic interests through a plethora of research opportunities.

Dedicated Research & Quality Improvement Blocks

Our residents receive dedicated time during their second-year Quality Improvement block to design and implement a project addressing identified gaps in care at East Alabama Health, such as patient safety, medication protocols, or outpatient follow-up. In addition, residents can participate in ongoing longitudinal projects or collaborate with the Office of Clinical Research to pursue broader scholarly interests.

Each resident is supported by a core faculty research mentor who provides guidance and advocacy, helping ensure successful development and completion of scholarly work.

Highlighting Excellence: Research Week 2026

Research Week is an annual celebration of the scholastic efforts of our Internal Medicine Residents. Each year, residents present posters highlighting case reports, quality improvement projects, and literature reviews. Additionally, the top three finalists (determined by a panel of judges) in both case reports and research presentations then give an oral presentation to residents and medical staff. The winners of the oral presentations are honored at our annual Research Week Awards Ceremony.

National Conference Participation & Research Dissemination

Residents actively learn and share their scholarly work beyond the institution, presenting and attending regional and national conferences across a range of clinical and research areas. These opportunities highlight their contributions to quality improvement and clinical research while fostering professional development, collaboration and engagement with the broader medical community.

Conferences our residents have attended include:

  • American College of Physicians (ACP) Internal Medicine Conference
  • Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Conference
  • Academic Internal Medicine - Chief Conferences
  • American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) Conference
  • Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Conference
  • American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Conference
