OPELIKA, Ala.—To encourage breast cancer screenings and the importance of early detection, East Alabama Health is offering two “Free Mammogram Days” this month for medically uninsured women in east Alabama.

The events are designed to remove cost as a barrier for women who may otherwise delay or skip recommended breast cancer screening.

“The most important thing for women, as far as breast health goes, is early diagnosis,” Lauren Thorington, D.O., breast radiologist at the Breast Health Center, said. “An annual mammogram is one of the most powerful tools we have to safeguard our health.”

The “Free Mammogram Days” will be offered at the following locations:

  • Friday, Oct. 23 at EAMC-Lanier Rural Emergency Hospital in Valley, Ala.
  • Friday, Oct. 30 at the Breast Health Center in Auburn, Ala.

To qualify, women must be medically uninsured, 40 years or older and have not had a mammogram within the past 12 months.

Appointments are required and may be scheduled online by clicking here. Appointment slots for “Free Mammogram Days” are limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

This is the second year that East Alabama Health has offered “Free Mammogram Days” for community members. The service is supported by the EAMC Foundation’s Breast Health Fund, which assists medically uninsured women with lifesaving breast cancer screenings year-round.
