Elaine Thomas - Education

Elaine Thomas (Education) has worn many hats over her 27 years with East Alabama Health. We recently talked with her about her career, accomplishments and what Black History Month means to her.

What is your job title here at EAH?

Education Coordinator.

How long have you been with EAH?

27 years as of this past December.

What inspired you to pursue your current job/career?

I wanted personal and professional growth. At the time I applied, I had recently completed the SAW (School at Work) program. I pursued the Education Department because it would be new and completely different from my role at the time. Plus, secretly, I had always wanted to teach (school).

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Purchasing a home stands out as a one of my proudest accomplishments, as well as my tenure at EAH. Working here has allowed me the opportunity to impact lives positively. Through training Multi-Care Technicians (MCTs), I've played a role in enhancing the quality of care we provide to our patients.

Who is a person in Black history (whether personally known to you or someone universally known) that has shaped your career and who you are today?

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has had a deep impact on me personally. How he advocated for equality, justice, and compassion serves as a constant inspiration for me. Dr. King was committed to addressing social issues and promoting peace. This resonates deeply with the principles of MCT training that prioritize care and empathy for our patients. His continuing influence has not only shaped my approach to patient care, but also instilled in me a dedication to promote inclusivity and equality within the healthcare profession.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month for me is reflecting, celebrating, and honoring the resilience, achievements, and contributions of Black cultures and the history of Black individuals.

Why is it important that we recognize this month?

Black History Month is important because it encourages learning about historical events, people, and the movements that have played a vital role in shaping the world. It also serves as an inspiration for so many.
