Scholarships
Scholarship Loan Program
East Alabama Health offers scholarship loan assistance to students who are ready to enter into the professional phase of their education. Degree programs considered for scholarship are based on strategic projections of East Alabama Health crucial job opportunities and degree of necessity. Applications are accepted twice a year, in April and September. The submission deadline for both dates is the first Friday of the month. In addition to the scholarship loan assistance program offered at East Alabama Health, the following scholarships are awarded annually:
Connie E. Young Scholarship
Connie Young, RN joined East Alabama Medical Center in 1984. More than half of her 32-year career was spent caring for patients on the Progressive Care and Intensive Care units. The balance of her career was spent in Perioperative Support. Friends describe Connie as a “vibrant soul” who was a passionate problem-solver and who brought optimism and humor to every situation. Connie’s career was put on hold in April 2016 after she developed a glioblastoma brain tumor. With support from many EAMC friends, Connie bravely fought the tumor for eight months before her body succumbed to the cancer on December 31, 2016. This is a renewable scholarship designed to help a high school senior gain access to higher education. The scholarship award is intended for students who face cost-prohibitive challenges in continuing their education beyond high school. High school seniors from Chambers, Lee, Macon, Russell, and Tallapoosa counties pursuing a degree as a registered nurse at Southern Union State Community College will be considered. They must attend consecutive semesters at Southern Union State Community College beginning in the fall after high school graduation. Dr. Paul H. Waddy, Jr. Scholarship
Dr. Paul H. Waddy, Jr. served on East Alabama Health’s Board of Directors for over 20 years and earned many awards and honor throughout his illustrious career. Dr. Waddy served as the Extension District Director for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at Alabama A&M University and Auburn University. He served as an Associate Professor (tenured) for the College of Education at Auburn University. East Alabama Health established this scholarship in honor of his service to provide financial assistance to an African American male interested in a career in pursuing a health-related career in which East Alabama Health has a projected need. These needed positions currently include nurses, respiratory therapists, LPNs, CNAs, MA-Cs, medical coders, medical technologists, and surgical technicians. Sharon L. Gess Memorial Scholarship
East Alabama Health offers this scholarship in memory of Sharon L. Gess who passed away on October 20, 2019. Sharon graduated from Notasulga High School and continued her education in the ROTC program at Tuskegee University. In 1994, Sharon graduated from Auburn University with a BA degree in Psychology. Sharon received her associate degree in Nursing from Southern Union State Community College in 2000. In 2002, she earned her BS in Nursing from Auburn University. She went on to earn her MBA from Auburn University Montgomery in (AUM) 2012. Sharon was a nursing director for a number of years at EAMC.
