Scrub Tech Apprenticeship Program
East Alabama Health's Scrub Tech Apprenticeship Program trains qualified employees to become safe and competent surgical techs who assist surgeons in the operating room.
What is a Scrub Tech?
A scrub tech, also known as a surgical technologist, plays a key role in the operating room by preparing the surgical environment, ensuring all instruments and supplies are sterile, and passing tools to the surgeon during procedures.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for scrub tech is projected to grow at five percent between 2024 and 2034, which is faster than the average growth rate of other jobs.
How does the Scrub Tech Apprenticeship Program work?
The Scrub Tech Apprenticeship program is a one-year registered apprenticeship program through the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship. The program consists of 6 weeks of class time and labs and 18 weeks of specialty rotations. Following this, apprentices complete another six months of guided mentor check-ins and orientation to specialty rotations.
Program Benefits:
- In-house training program: Program apprentices complete all their training, from classwork to specialty rotations, on-site at East Alabama Medical Center.
- Paid learning and on-the-job training: Employees are receive compensation for attending classes and training.
- Guaranteed employment: Upon program completion, apprentices transition into full-time roles as scrub techs in either the The Surgery Center, Labor and Delivery or Cardiovascular OR.
